Monks’ Barn – romantic rural wedding venue
If romance is important to your wedding – and there are few weddings that don’t make romance a central part of the day, then Monks’ Barn in Berkshire is the perfect venue for you. It’s a grade II* listed medieval barn, located in the picturesque village of Hurley in Berkshire. Hurley itself is a lovely place, on a curve of the Upper Thames and used as a mooring for boats and popular with campers, it has wonderful pubs too! For a bride who’s always wanted to arrive for her wedding by water, Monks’ Barn is an absolute first choice as the barn is only a short walk from Hurley Lock. A wedding that can be accessed by boat has to be just about the most romantic location possible!
Flexible weddings in an outstanding setting
Monks’ Barn lends itself to many different wedding themes: shabby chic, country wedding, barn wedding (of course), garden, medieval … it’s a setting that makes the perfect backdrop to a wide range of approaches and budgets and is at its best when the gorgeous flagstone floor of the barn is being used to frame your chosen wedding decor. And if Monks’ Barn looks strangely familiar, it could be because it’s featured in several TV shows including Midsomer Murders and Burt and Dickie, a BBC special that was created to celebrate the 1948 Olympic sculls team.
Big weddings need generous venues
Because the Great Hall seats up to 150 people, it’s a great space in which to host a large wedding, and because Monks’ Barn is happy for you to bring your own caterer, florist and decor, this is a fantastic opportunity to create a wedding space that will work for the biggest group without feeling crowded – the high ceilings really lend a sense of space and balance no matter how many people you have around you. So if you’ve always wanted something a bit different for your wedding, Monks’ Barn might be just right for you, as it easily lends itself to quirky approaches.
The traditionally built barn, constructed of flint and chalk, is also a beautiful structure for wedding photography, and the lawn outside, which would have been called a greensward when the barn was built, is a great place on which to welcome guests with a cocktail or glass of Prosecco and serves also as a backdrop for really big group photographs. It’s also the ideal place to set up a Photo-Booth, or outdoor games for your reception, allowing you to spread out and have fun in spectacular surroundings.
